How to Avoid a Catastrophic Oil Spill, at Carnegie Branch Library, Re: Enbridge Pipe Line 5

May 8, 2017 @ 10:30 pm - May 9, 2017 @ 12:30 am

For 64 years a double oil pipeline has been aging at the bottom of one of the most sensitive areas in the entire Great Lakes, the Straits of Mackinac. Enbridge, a Canadian company, built their pipeline 5 in 1953 to last 40-50 years. Now it is 14-24 years after it’s given lifespan. In 2013 the pumps feeding the pipeline were upgraded to push an extra 50,000 barrels a day through the ancient pipeline, with no upgrade to the line itself. It’s only a matter of time before there’s a dump of impossible-to-clean-up oil into the Great Lakes.
Join us as David Holtz (Chairman of the Executive Committee, Michigan Sierra Club) shares the latest information on the issues surrounding Enbridge Line 5, and how you can help.
